Chief Executive Officer and member, Governing Board, Corona Schools’ Trust Council, Adeyoyin Adesina, has called for more investment in educational activities like quiz competitions to help sharpen pupils’ knowledge, speed and accuracy.
Adesina said competitions are important, given the modern demands of the ever-changing educational landscape.
Speaking at the 2021 Corona Schools inter-schools quiz competition held in Lagos, Adesina said the changes in the competition from pen to paper activity, and a fully computer-based testing event, is a testament to the school’s advancement in the field of technology.
The educationist noted that the idea of introducing pupils to quiz competitions is to develop their spirit of sportsmanship, which means being fair and ethical to opponents and teammates, before, during and after the competition.
She said the fact that different schools emerge winner every year show the competitive spirit among Corona primary schools, adding “that no one school dominated showed the uniformity of standards across our schools.”
Director of Education, Corona Schools’ Trust Council, Mrs. Amelia Dafeta, said the interschool quiz was to spur pupils to go out of their comfort zone, do research and get themselves prepared to compete in a healthy manner.
Dafeta noted that the event is another avenue by the council to test quality control across their schools.
She called on other schools to engage in similar competitions to give teachers and pupils the quest for continuous learning.
Head of Corona School, Ikoyi, Mrs Adenike Onafeso, while expressing joy for the feat achieved by her school, said the secret behind their success is team spirit.
While commending the council for organising the competition, the educationist pointed out that across all Corona Schools; they ensure that pupils fit into the global market.
At the end of the keenly contested exercise, Ikoyi School emerged overall winner with 88.5 points; Victoria Island second with 77.8 points; Lekki School with 76.7 points and Gbagada School with 75.1 points came third and fourth respectively.
